Hitachi were awarded preferred bidder status by Labour for the contract to build the rolling stock for Britain’s intercity ntework but Tory Minister, Philip Hammond, tried to introduce a second unnamed bid causing extreme disquiet with Hitachi who threatened to walk away.

Hitachi statement (Ultimatum)...

"However we are disappointed that there is yet no decision on our bid for the IEP, and therefore on our plans to bring jobs to the UK. We will be continuing our talks with the Department for Transport and will consider our position in the light of these."

These clowns almost blew the whole Hitachi deal. From 2010.
