Names struck from 44 San Francisco schools, including Lincoln, Revere — and Feinstein

George Washington owned slaves. Abraham Lincoln backed policies that harmed Native American tribes. And former mayor Dianne Feinstein has been accused of ordering a Confederate flag to be replaced after it was torn down.

Their names and others will now be stripped from 44 San Francisco schools following a 6-1 vote Tuesday by district leaders, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

School names honoring Paul Revere, Francis Scott Key, Thomas Jefferson, Herbert Hoover, Father Junipero Serra and Robert Louis Stevenson are among those to be changed, according to a district list.

It appears that all schools named after persons will be renamed. This move is less linked to slave ownership, as to the difficulty in finding any people with clean records. Lol...

I'm about as lefty as it gets here, and I don't agree with changing the names of all these schools. It's important for children (and a lot of adults, apparently) to realize that everyone from nation-leader to street-sweeper does good things and bad things.

Teach chlldren that the people their schools were named after weren't perfect, and that the schools were named after them to honor their achievements, not the bad things they did.

And then maybe let's get around to saving the planet from man-made, accelerated climate change?

Depends what you mean by more or less left wing. I'm using the term to measure it as a place on a scale. AOC is left of Pelosi. They are both firmly on the left side of the political spectrum in the US.

I giggle at the reason why the name of the 'Dianne Feinstein School' has to be changed. There once was a flagpole in front of the school, with many flags flying from it including the slavery flag. The purpose of flying many flags was originally to symbolize unity and the multi-culturalism of San Francisco.

While Dianne Feinstein was a San Francisco Supervisor some black students climbed the pole and ripped down the slavery flag. Dianne immediately took up the cause of replacing the slavery flag, thinking she was championing multi-cultural unity.

Who knew a liberal like her would be tagged as a racist because the flag was finally recognized as a symbol of slavery?

What's wrong with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi? It's not as if they are calling for insurrection, or the assassination of anyone. Both good people.

It was a different time, no doubt. No one in Hollywood batted an eye at making a show where an Orange Dodge Charger was one of the stars and it was named General Lee and had the Battle Flag on its roof.

As to that, I believe the Democratic Party is due for a huge split of it's own. Republicans are goners, as they have evolved into 'cult' status.

I believe the two-party system will take up the slack by a party on the left, perhaps the reinvigorated Progressive Party.

Socialists represent a specific cause, class, or element of the public, as does Labour in the UK. I don't think the US conceives of its parties in the same way.

Perhaps the Socialists could align with the Progressive Party, but to turn to a socialist party, people would have to accept that as their definition. I don't think a single element like that would fly in America.
