Rebecca Long-Bailey sacked for sharing article containing anti-Israel conspiracy theory

Rebecca Long-Bailey has been sacked as shadow education secretary by Sir Keir Starmer, after sharing an article containing "an antisemitic conspiracy theory".

A spokesman for the Labour leader confirmed he had asked her to step side and stressed his commitment to "restoring trust with the Jewish community".

The spokesman said: “This afternoon Keir Starmer asked Rebecca Long-Bailey to step down from the Shadow Cabinet. The article Rebecca shared earlier today contained an antisemitic conspiracy theory.

“As Leader of the Labour Party, Keir has been clear that restoring trust with the Jewish community is a number one priority. Antisemitism takes many different forms and it is important that we all are vigilant against it.”

Earlier today Ms Long-Bailey had shared an interview with the actress Maxine Peak, in which she claimed Israelis taught American police the technique that killed George Floyd.

They really do not care or listen to Jews or understand such a claim. After so many people angry over this death by the US Police. To castigate and blame Jews for training this. When they never did. Ends up with more people blaming Jews. Which has gone up for well over 2000 years, leading to an increase of violence and hate against Jews

But, I think the point is well-taken if you mean that, by their fame, they are over-heard. But that has as much to do with the hearers.

They have a following and they have the means to influence a lot of people. Given the way anti-semitism has reared it's ugly head recently in the Labour party one would think the actress should be very careful what she is saying, and more importantly the politician shouldn't be repeating what she has said as if she is the bloody oracle.

Yes. The public affords to actors/stars far too much importance. Ronald Reagan got elected that way, and without any real qualification.

But truth be told, Reagan had as much right to run for public office as anyone. It's kinda the vending machine model of politics: you know what you are getting before you select, and you can always make another selection.

Nancy watched her husbands back. Reagan was a Governor of a state before he was President.

Actually, Reagan was the first Republican president who allowed subordinates to run roughshod over him, and produced a cabal of Republican advisors that included Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, who tried to recreate the same situation with GWB, formerly president of a baseball team.  You will recall Cheney/Rumsfeld lied and started the 2d Iraq war.  Reagan's sole qualification for entering politics was that he gave a speech at Chevez Revine Stadium promoting Barry Goldwater for president in 1964.

True, Reagan spent two terms as California's governor, but he was detached and unprepared for that job too.  He was shunted aside by subordinates in that role.  He won the presidency because he looked the part.  He was 74 at his 2d-term inauguration, and probably entered the on-set of dementia soon after.  It is said that Nancy Reagan called the shots as macho-in-chief in that period, til the end.

Bush was a two-term governor as well. Being a governor isn't as great a qualification to be president as some people seem to think. Some governors have made good presidents, but it's really hit or miss.

I'd prefer a president who comes from Congress -- that gives them a leg up on knowing how to get things done in D.C.

Governors and presidents are both from the executive branch. They have roughly the same roles.

Legislators have zero experiencing running anything except a very tiny office.

Governors have no experience in foreign policy--fully half the job of the president.  Legislators have hands-on with not only foreign policy, but budgets, appropriations, military, and a myriad of things that governors rarely see...except New York, California, and maybe, Florida with Cubans and south/central Americans.

As I understand it--mind you, it's all gossip--Nancy knew that subordinates were using Ronald as a patsy.  She resented that, and Nancy could hold a grudge.

Reagan never was politically savvy.  He knew simple truths, like: we are wealthy, they are not; if we outspend the Soviets on military items, we will bust their balls.  He built the Star Wars Defense system, and the Sov's could not keep up, and folded.  That's why he is so revered, but it was just street-smarts.  It didn't take intelligence to figure it out.

When Ronnie started fading, Nancy took over...kinda as his protector.  She naturally gained power and it wasn't in her personality not to start paying back.  When she was through, she was the highest power left.  She called the shots, and I guess she could be called the de facto president.

But the weasels got their revenge three presidents later.  They destroyed the Republican legacy, and you guys already know how the vacuum was filled.  Right now, there is no Republican Party.
