London cyclists too white, male and middle class, says capital's cycling chief in vow to tackle diversity 'problem'

Too few women and people from ethnic minority groups cycle in London and more must be done to promote diversity among a largely white, male and middle class biking community, the city’s walking and cycling commissioner has said. Grand schemes, such as the Cycle Superhighway network of partially-segregated routes linking the suburbs with the centre, are too often perceived as simply a way of getting “middle-aged men cycling faster around the city”, Will Norman acknowledged.

He said he was considering setting diversity targets for London’s cycling population to ensure progress was achieved.

I doubt a lot of women want to get cycling, you'd have to have showers and changing facilities at work and start out that much earlier to get there and shower and change, do your make up and hair before you start your job, you get very dirty cycling along in traffic even in a cycle lane although I understand all women don't fit this stereotype.

What?? Men can have stinky balls, but women must have sweet smelling vaginas? I've always had showers in my offices...for bikers, joggers, or gymnasts, whatever.

Doesn't take any extra time -- if they have a sweaty ride to work (not all do -- those who live close enough may just have a slow and easy ride..) they shower at work -- that extra time at work is negated by less time wasting at home of a morning...

Any extra time on the commute (which may not be that much, anyway, as bicycling around cities is often faster than cars and motorbikes, and still cheaper than public transport..), means that much less of one's personal time spent in exercise in gyms or out jogging..

More relevant and realistic disincentives will include hilly terrain, distances for those living out on the fringes, and a maybe some irrational fears of moving traffic and exhaust fumes.

the man who made this report is being paid a huge salary by the people of London. I suggest they demand a refund.

Once again it's a poor choice of words. He can encourage other groups of people to start use bikes without saying that those who already do are too ''male, white & middle class". Find a less offensive way to put your message across!

The same poor language was used when they tried to encourage diversity in rambling as a form of exercise, few years ago.

It aint what you say, it's the way you say it.
