A woman was screaming hysterically and looking to the heavens': Shocked witnesses saw bricks fall five storeys from crane working on £650,000 luxury flats onto woman now fighting for her life

Shocked witnesses have described the moment they saw a pallet of bricks fall five storeys from a crane and hit a woman who is now fighting for her life.

The woman is critically ill in hospital after being struck by falling debris while walking next to the construction site for a new housing development in Mile End in east London on Tuesday morning.

Officers attended the scene at 9.38am, where bystanders were helping the woman who had been spotted lying in a pile of rubble and broken wood on Burdett Road, Tower Hamlets.

Paramedics took the woman to hospital after the incident outside Bow Corner, a new development of luxury flats. A second person was also taken to hospital.

Alan Harris, who owns go-kart track Revolution Karting that faces the development, said he rushed over to see what had happened after hearing a 'loud bang.'

'One woman was out cold underneath the bricks and another woman next to her was screaming hysterically for an ambulance and looking up into the heavens,' he told the East London Advertiser.

Bloody hell! Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

You leave home to go to work or do errands and never return because some horrendous fluke accident happens.

No one can predict these horrible tragedies.

When your numbers up, no escape from it.

I do believe in fate, some walk away from a plane crash, a bad car accident, etc. Just not your fate to go now.

I don't know whether it's fate, luck, or just coincidence Mags.
Its the closing door scenario though whichever way you look at it....forget your car keys and go back you could miss/befall a fatal accident by seconds.

Hopefully she will pull through without too many problems,

some one wants busting big style for that, accident my ass.....avoidable almost certainly....

Its so sad she has died of her injuries.

I think Vic is right, more info is coming out about the shoddy practices this building company used.
Negligence seems to have caused this tragedy.

Yes she was only young. It was the equipment they used, probably cheap and unsafe, to fall like it did.

So sad for her child and husband.
