We are constantly told that immigration adds to the economy and a multicultural society enriches our lives. If there are no negatives, what is making British people say that immigration worries them?

The first Issues Index poll of 2014 by Ipsos-MORI on behalf of The Economist shows that concern about race relations and immigration is now, joint with the economy, the most important issue facing Britain – possibly a consequence of the relaxation on restrictions on migrant labour from Romania and Bulgaria as of January 1st. This puts worries about race relations and immigration at its highest since April 2008. Unsurprisingly, concern with race and immigration issues is at its most acute in the suburbs and among the relatively old.

However, Didge and several others say otherwise.... according to them the UK is not full up at all, there is plenty of room for tinted folk and east europeans to come over, fill up our schools, dentists, GP surgeries, make waiting lists for operations even longer, create more jams on the road.

Are the lefties trying to break this country?

Its an opinion poll, you do realise that keith but it is a concern that we do need to control immigration which I have said all along, my beef is the racial arguments used against immigration which is very different.

Nick Clegg's favourite think tank has said migrants to the UK should pay a £2,000 advance before entering Britain to cover care and benefits and wait at least 1 year before being able to claim anything.

The National Insurance Advance would be paid by anyone from outside the EU and would only be refunded once they have paid enough tax or left the country without becoming a drain on the welfare state.

The radical report for CentreForum, written by a Lib Dem policy adviser, will heap pressure on Mr Clegg to go further in promising tougher action to deal with immigration.

The report says the bond would ‘demonstrate that migrants are coming to the UK to work, not claim’.

It follows concern that immigrants are accessing services and the benefits system without paying in to the welfare state.

Alasdair Murray, the report’s author, said: ‘Politicians are engaged in an arms race around immigration policy which appears to have more to do with looking tough than genuinely addressing people's concerns with practical policy.

‘It is possible to restore confidence in the immigration system by making it more transparent, ending the perception that migrants can access the benefits system without first contributing and developing a target that reflects the real social and economic needs of the country.’

The report also criticises Mr Cameron’s pledge to cut net migration to the ‘tens of thousands’, describing this target as ‘perverse’ and ‘unfulfillable’.
