Deadly Chicago Police Shooting Video Released

A federal judge has ordered the release of surveillance video showing a Chicago police officer killing an unarmed black teenager.

The footage shows Cedrick Chatman, a carjacking suspect, being shot dead during a foot chase on the city's south side in January 2013.

As the wounded 17-year-old lies in the street, one of the officers places his boot on top of him as he is handcuffed. Officer Kevin Fry, who is white, said he opened fire after seeing the teenager turn toward officers with a dark object in his hand.

Investigators later determined the object was an iPhone box.             

A lawyer for the Chatman family, who are pursuing a wrongful-death lawsuit, says the teenager neither turned nor posed a threat.

What has that got to do with a very strong case here for where the possibility is the lad was shot in the back?

Was he shot in the back?

I can't make out what happened in that video.

I am not sure either, but it seems they have evidence that contradicts the police account.

Who's the guy in the yellow jacket thing? He looks very nonchalant.

If you are a police officer or anyone who believes their life is threatened by a person with a gun and you are decking it, shoot first to save yourself.
If you live in Chicago with the black crime around you stopping to shout trick or treat will get you killed.

It's not really possible to tell. Cedrick Chatman ran around a corner, and then was shot. You can't tell what happened just before he came around the corner.

Of course, and the answer is genocide.  Why didn't we on the left think of that?  Oh, that's right...because we care about human life.

Does the right think they can continue kidnapping, raping, torture and killing, and still be popular?  The Chicago Police think so.  The right seems not to grasp--whether its politics or sales--those people they hate so much are votes, dollars or simply popularity, as in The Oscars and The Emmy Awards.  Conservatives and Republicans have to come to grips with the fact that you can't keep kicking and spitting on people, and expected to get elected or selected.

In this country, the once proud Republican Party has become a hollowed-out hulk, on its last breath.  But for the betrayal of Tony Blair, the UK would also have advanced to the realization that the right is dying...dying of it's own internal inconsistencies.  This is what death is like.  

You either change, and receive new life, or you go down killing and maiming, only to be remembered as the freak you were at the end.  The Chicago Police are representatives of the last gasp brigade...this is the moment before the freaks expire.  And this is the moment before the Republican Party expires (didja catch that ridiculous debate last night?).  The old, white men are wheezing, gasping and yelling...and no one is listening any more.

I have long since given up on the south, and I want them out of the country as soon as possible.  Now, look, the wood rot is infecting the north.

A further question is - if someone who is suspected of committing a crime is running away, and it's likely that they will get away, is it OK to shoot them?

I've said it before - people in the US who run away from the police are playing with fire - they know they might get shot, or they should know by now.

No.  That insightful question is the very crux of the matter.  Anyone, even a law enforcement officer, may us deadly force only to counter opposing force that threatens the life or limb of oneself, or someone else.  Use of deadly force to stop flight is illegal.  

That is the reason why the police always fabricate some additional 'state-of-mind' claim, such as: I thought his wallet [which he was pulling out to retrieve his identification] was a gun.  Then, you see, they can retreat to the I was mistaken defense.  Because it's a defense predicated on 'state-of-mind', who can contradict them?

Police science is a well-studied art.
