Plastic Carrier Bags

Dear Rupert

Thanks for getting in touch about the proceeds of the carrier bag levy.

The proceeds must be re-invested in good causes such as health, the environment and sustainability as part of the guidelines set out by the Government. Tesco and other retailers can only recover some set-up and administration costs from the charge and we adhere to this at all times.

We want our customers and colleagues to be at the heart of our local community funded programmes. We will be asking customers to nominate and then vote for community or charity schemes in their area, this will be communicated via the Community Notice Board in-store.

The money generated by the bag charge will go to local and national good causes. It is our customer's money Rupert, so customers will be able to choose where it goes. Our new community programme will ask for local charities and community groups to apply for funding and then customers will be able to vote for who they want to help.

Applications will open for local charities and community groups to apply for grants. These will then be shortlisted down to three projects per area, which will then go to a customer vote in the New Year to determine the grant amounts. We're also encouraging our customers and colleagues to nominate projects that they'd most like to see benefit their local area, so these causes can be encouraged to make an application.

In each store we will be using resources like the Community Board where customers can find out about what local projects the proceeds of the bag charge have supported in their local area, and communicate important information about the scheme.
