Pierce Brosnan believes Idris Elba to be an actor with the necessary presence and charisma for Bond

During a chat to promote his own film 'No Escape', Pierce is inevitably asked about Bond, and he tells Details magazine,

"Let's start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet."

He's less sure about the prospect of a gay James Bond any time soon, however.

He explains, "I don't know how it would work. I don't think Barbara [Broccoli, the James Bond producer] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing."

Barbara Broccoli has managed the Bond franchise impeccably since inheriting it from her late father Cubby. There is no inference by Pierce that she lacks tolerance for gay people or roles, more that her protectiveness of the role as it was created by writer Ian Fleming is well known, and one of Bond's most celebrated talents/flaws is his enduring success with the ladies.

Daniel Craig will be taking the role of 007 for the fourth time in the forthcoming 'Spectre', and there has long been speculation that, when the time comes to replace him, a black actor could step in. Idris Elba is the obvious choice, although he appeared to have ruled himself out of consideration a year ago, saying he'd broken the rule of talking about it, because he kept being asked.

The first few films were based on the books.
From You Only Live Twice onwards the course was away from the books and towards over-the-top extravaganzas that descended into self-parody in the later Roger Moore movies.
After that, the source material had basically run out, but the actors kept trying to get back to a darker Bond, more like the one in the book.
Timothy Dalton was ahead of his time with his gritty Bond.
Pierce Brosnan settled for a mid-course between the Bond from the books and the lighter, movie Bond. He was trapped by rather formulaic scripts though.
Daniel Craig's Bond owes a lot to the books, His popularity is helped by the current audience's liking for more complex characters and less formulaic storylines.

I do like Daniel Craig, after Sean Connery. I was an avid Bond reader, so I knew all of the plots. Thus, I hated when they began to depart, even though those they did film did not conform to the book always.

Tommy, the books did follow (roughly) a single narrative or timeline. As the producers mixed them up, they had to change the scripts to make events run smoothly from one to the next. Thus began the departure from the Fleming narrative. I believe Goldfinger was the third film, but the seventh book. It was the first film that had nothing whatsoever to the book's story.

They had the same difficulty in the Clancy books, where Dr. Jack Ryan was/wasn't a CIA operative, etc., depending on when they placed his transition from professor at the Naval Academy to the CIA. But second book Patriot Games (set in 1981) was a prequel to first book The Hunt for Red October (set in 1984) anyway, and that confused things even further.

Speaking of British espionage fiction, has anybody else ever checked out the Queen and Country series by Greg Rucka? (He's actually American but the main characters work for MI6). Fantastic comics and even better novels.

So again many ethnicities can lay claim to be British as the main reason is that British or English are just made up conceptions to define people, who are all one biological race.

I don't care much because I hate Bond films, so this colours my judgement, pardon the pun (and I fancy Idris, which clouds my judgement).

But I am asking myself, what if I loved the Bond films? Would I care?

And the answer is very probably, yes.

It'd be like watching your favourite mini-series and all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, your favourite Actor X, was switched for someone who isn't even pretending to be anything or look anything like, Actor X.

And yeah, that would bother me.
It's not a racial thing at all.
It's not even about Actor X.
It's about changing something halfway through.

And Vic the meat-eater has a point; write a bloody good film about a bloke and cast Idris in that if you like him!

I love the Bond films. Have since I was about 8 years old. As I've already said I'd prefer him to stay white and straight- but it isn't going to have spitting feathers or boycotting if they do cast Idris, whatever, it'll still be a Bond film and no doubt a good one- whatever.

The only real exceptions I make are with real characters or characters who, historically, wouldn't have been black.

The problem is you are such an idiot youy think a person canot identify with a group, even though that group is an invention. All nationalities are inventions, hence why anyone born into that land will be defined as that nationality, where they also can identify with their ethnicity which is also an invention, because biologically none of these nationalities really exist. This is why you are such an idiot to claim its racist to say African American, where many peoploe identify the same with Irish American, Italian American, Swedish American etc. Nationalities arew just identities of which anyone born here is classified as and hence what a black actor can easily play Bond. You do not need to have skin to play Bond
