Tony Benn former cabinet minister will now lie in Parliament’s chapel before his funeral

The body of Tony Benn will rest overnight in Parliament’s chapel before his funeral – an honour only previously given to Baroness Thatcher.

The Queen gave permission for the move yesterday after it was suggested by Speaker John Bercow to the Benn family, who said they were ‘deeply touched’.

After Edward Heath, he is one of only two MPs to be awarded the freedom of the House in honour of his ‘very long and distinguished service’.
‘It is this almost unique distinction which forms the basis for Tony Benn to be accorded the privilege to ‘rest’ in the Chapel on the eve of his funeral,’ said a spokesman.

Has caused a little disconcertion amoung both Conservatives and labour.....

personally as he had already been awarded the freedom of the House I think he should receive it until he can't be present anylonger.

I think it's a lovely idea. Of course he won't, and shouldn't, get a state funeral, but this is only fitting at he had the Freedom of the House. The final freedom.

A tip of the hat to all that made this possible the man deserves it. Love him or hate him, you couldn't ignore him  Unlike the shower we have now.  they're  all  forgettable.
