Yale is sued for ‘bias against white and Asian applicants’

The US Department of Justice has sued Yale University, alleging that it discriminates against white and Asian Americans and favours applications from black and Hispanic candidates.

A complaint filed with a court in Connecticut alleges that Yale deliberately subjects applicants “to discrimination on the grounds of race and national origin” as it attempts “to ensure a racially balanced” intake of students each year.

The lawsuit is the latest salvo by the Trump administration against leading Ivy League colleges and the practice of affirmative action, advanced during the civil rights era as a method to expand the opportunities for minorities.

It accused Harvard of violating civil rights law, joining a lawsuit filed by an Asian-American group that was ultimately rejected by a federal judge. A similar suit had been filed against Yale and in August, Eric Dreiband, assistant attorney-general for the department’s civil rights division, accused the college of “unlawfully dividing Americans into racial and ethnic blocs”.

Mr Dreiband said that an investigation by his department had shown that “Asian Americans and whites have only one-tenth to one-fourth of the likelihood of admission as African American applicants with comparable academic credentials” and demanded that Yale agree to stop considering race as a factor in its admissions cycle for the coming year.
