Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg announced a new financial gift in support of four historically Black medical schools to increase the number of Black doctors in the U.S.

The money will significantly reduce the debt burden of approximately 800 medical students, many of whom face increased financial pressure due to COVID-19.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies gift is the largest-ever received by Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

Yet more division......don't white medical students get into debt in the US, because they certainly do in the UK.

I half-agree with you.  Apparently, Bloomberg thinks he is performing a kind of affirmative action, putting more black doctors on the street.  But—joke’s on him—these so-called black universities now admit white students as well.  In fact, I happen to have a very good white friend who is a physician graduate from Howard Medical School.

But I think this is old-school affirmative action…throw money at the problem.  It reeks of charity.  Since the main issue is the withholding of opportunity, not money, those who are in a position to should throw opportunities at disenfranchised students.  After all, what was denied to persons of color to begin with was opportunity; so, if we are going to engage in compensatory efforts we should go directly to the heart of the matter.  If we are going to take affirmative action, it ought to be like-kind affirmative action.

I’m not saying we should put ill-equipped black physicians on the street.  I’m saying we should stop putting ill-equipped white students on the street.  Whites with money have, in the past, been given slots in universities when they didn’t deserve them.  How do you think Trump got into the Ivy-League University of Pennsylvania (hint: his daddy paid a smart kid to show up and take li’l Donnie’s entrance exams)?  For every improperly placed white student, a seat is denied to some black student.  Fix the problem where it is broken, and solve it in the correct manner.
