Wow.  That doesn't sound good.  I suppose he has to do something about the Ukraine or lose face.

Russia's state news agencies quoted the defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, saying Putin ordered the test at 2pm Moscow time on Wednesday. The Kremlin was unable to confirm the order.

The provocative display of Russian military muscle comes as Ukraine's interim leadership urgently sought to win the confidence of its divided and economically ravaged nation with the creation of a new unity government.

Pro-European protesters filled Kiev's Maidan square – the seat of the Ukrainian revolution – preparing to meet the replacement cabinet proposed by Oleksandr Turchynov, Ukraine's acting president, on Wednesday, as Turchynov dismissed the country's feared riot police.

Turchynov had warned on Tuesday that the country faced a serious threat from separatism amid fears the Kremlin may be stoking pro-Russian sentiment in the Crimean peninsula.

"We discussed the question of not allowing any signs of separatism and threats to Ukraine's territorial integrity and punishing people guilty of this," Turchynov said after meeting key officials.

Yes Andy chap, I doubt that any of us would want to go off fighting in the Crimea, we went there once and apparently it was shite, M'lud could bring some light, so to speak,,,, on this subject matter.

Problem is chap, Ukraine's western subjects are European and the Eastern ones are ruskies with H bombs, so letting them get on with, in this instance could be construed as a tad nonchalant!

It's like a never-ending cycle. Just the word 'Sevastopol' conjures up the spectre of war - and by coincidence it's exactly 100 years since WW1. Then there are several countries' economies on the verge of collapse....

A little bit of history repeating, Putin is rumoured to be tougher than Chuck Norris!!!,,,if Chuck Norris were dead he would resurrect himself and kill Putin for sure,,,putting that aside, Putin does like to flex some,,,,,,,,

"The “most cherished dream” of Sevastopol’s residents is for the city to return to Russian territory, says Ms Timofeyeva. “Being without Russia, for us, is like being homeless. It’s like someone boiled off a piece of our heart and discarded it far away . . . like there’s not enough air to breathe.”

Now, following the events in Kiev, some locals are starting to hope that at least Sevastopol – if not the rest of Crimea – could be taken back under Moscow’s wing.

“The Russian bear has been sleeping for a long time. But when you wake him up, he will bear his claws and show his teeth,” said Vyacheslav Nikolayevich, a Russian naval veteran, as he mixed with dozens outside Sevastopol’s city administration building on Tuesday. “That is what everyone here today is expecting.”"

Russian military vehicles have been photographed in the main square of Sevastopol, and there are fears that Ukraine is about to plunge into a very bloody civil war. The pro-Russian eastern half of Ukraine is in a state of shock, and many living there are openly calling on Russia to militarily intervene to protect them against the protest groups that have seized power in Kiev.

And Russia is not just sitting back and waiting to see what will happen. They are actively moving military forces into position for a potential conflict. Just check out this excerpt from an International Business Times article entitled “Russian Ships Arrive On Ukraine’s Crimean Coast As Fears Mount Over Russian Invasion In the Region“…
According to Russian news site flot.com, Russian military ships carrying soldiers have arrived on Ukraine’s Crimean coast in what some are claiming could be the early signs of a Russian coup in the hotly disputed autonomous region of the Crimea.
Russia’s large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov has arrived near the Russia Black Sea Fleet’s base at Sevastopol, which Russia has leased from Ukraine since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The ship is reported to be carrying as many as 200 soldiers and has joined four additional ships carrying an unknown amount of Special Forces troops. Flot.com also reported over the weekend that personnel from the 45th Airborne Special Forces unit and additional divisions had been airlifted into Anapa, a city on Russia’s Black Sea coastline. In addition, it is believed that Russia’s Sevastopol base contains as many as 26,000 troops already, according to the German Institute for International And Security Affairs.

And BO from America announced this week he is to slash the size of US Armed Forces............

Doubt the yanks will react at all. Failed to so in Syria when thousands are dying. BO is a weak President and is letting the world walk over him. Pity the costs could be huge...........

BREAKING: Russian Flag raised over Crimea Parliament Building

Bottles, stones and flags flew in the air as thousands of pro- and anti-Russian demonstrators clashed in front of the parliament building in Simferopol, the capital of Ukraine's autonomous Crimea Region.

Two separate rallies, consisting of several thousands of protesters, faced each other on Wednesday. Russians shouted “Russia-Russia!” and “Berkut!”, the name of the special police task force disbanded yesterday by the new Ukrainian authorities, who blame them for heavy-handed policing of opposition activists in recent months in central Kiev. The Muslim community protesters were shouting “Ukraine-Ukraine!” and “Crimea is not Russia!” Pro-Russian demonstrators were holding Russian flags, while Tatars were holding Ukrainian flags and flags of their own nationalist organizations.

Things are definitely going from bad to worse - and the ousted Presdent's in Moscow under Putin's protection, so he's not going to let them turn to Europe.

I know everyone disses GLP but there are big threads covering all aspects of this; obviously as it's open to anyone to post there are quite a few nutters replying, but it hasn't missed anything. Here's one that's nearly 500 pages long!

Russian Lawmakers Push to Simplify Annexing New Territories
MOSCOW, February 28 (RIA Novosti) – Lawmakers in Russia introduced a bill in parliament on Friday to simplify the absorption of new territories into the country in what will be widely interpreted as a signal that Moscow may be planning to gain control over Ukraine’s mainly ethnic Russian-populated region of Crimea.
The decision on the accession of a part of a foreign state to Russia should be taken through a referendum.

Nah we won't

Europe and NATO will huff and puff and Putin will pretend to listen whilst in reality not giving a shit

Besides it's an internal conflict where the people of the region are split in their views on this

Your right, nothing will happen other than diplomatic rhetoric and warnings getting chucked around like confetti from the UN.

Probably end up suggesting a referendum for Crimea - they're very popular.
