Good Republicans should abandon Trump, says former CIA Director

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden has spoken up, urging fellow Republicans, or indeed anyone, to shun the administration of pussy-grabber Trump.  "Hayden depicts [Trump] as a congenital liar and a 'useful idiot'” of Vladimir Putin, says Yahoo news.  He also urges that anyone who joins the Trump administration will have their professional reputation scarred for life.  Speaking of past, now fired Trump cabinet officials, Hayden notes:

Yahoo News wrote:“The longer they were in the administration, the more their personal credentials were being threatened,” Hayden said. “At what point do you stop being a guard rail and become an enabler and a legitimizer?”

This and much more is the message of a new book by Hayden, The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of Lies.  Hayden acknowledges that politicians do lie--he served the administration of GWB, which started the Iraq War with the lie that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.  However, he distinguishes Trump:

Michael Hayden wrote:“We’ve had presidents who lie, who have argued with us, who have disagreed with our version of objective reality...the difference here is, this seems to be a president who bases a fair number of decisions on something other than a view of objective reality."

I question whether Hayden is being completely forthcoming here.  I, myself, have argued that the Republican alliance with falsehoods began with the WMD debate regarding Iraq.  To be sure, Trump lives in a cloud of lies--The Washington Post has documented over 3,000 falsehoods, belied by the evidence, Trump has told since taking office--but when it comes to lies being the predicate for catastrophic geopolitical decisions, George W. Bush takes the cake.  Of course, most of the Bush administration's mendacity was laid on the doorstep of VP Richard Cheney, and his chief-of-staff goon, David Addington.  Nevertheless, we must acknowledge that Republican affinity for falsehood, which has welcomed Trump's mendacious tactics, began in Bush administration.

Nevertheless, it is telling to hear a liar's liar, tell us to shun someone because he lies.  That's got to be profound.  His main purpose is to advise seasoned statesmen not to sacrifice their reputations on the Trump administration.  Is it better to leave one's reputation tattered by the Bush administration?
