I've said it before, and I'll say it once more -- global capitalists don't care about jobs, they don't care about anything except finding their next batch of slave labor to exploit:

(Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) said on Monday it would stop making cars and engines in Australia by the end of 2017, marking the end of an era for a once-vibrant auto production base and the loss of thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

Toyota's decision follows the planned exits of General Motors (GM.N) and Ford Motor (F.N) announced last year and would leave no global automaker remaining in Australia as high costs and a strong currency make it an unattractive production base.

"We did everything that we could to transform our business, but the reality is that there are too many factors beyond our control that make it unviable to build cars in Australia," Toyota Australia President Max Yasuda said in a statement.

About 2,500 jobs will be affected when the plant stops building cars in 2017, the company said.

Toyota's exit from Australia after more than half a century there is a setback to Prime Minister Tony Abbott's conservative government, which is seeking to manage a slowdown in the $1.5 trillion economy as a decade-long mining investment boom slows.

This was a long time coming.

It is not that bad as we they have been getting taxpayer hand outs to keep them here, Since Holden (GM) and Ford announced they are leaving it was inevitable that Toyota would too, as many of the third party suppliers would go out of business with out all 3 as customers.

Really manufacturing is not something we can compete in as we are too far away, too spread out and too few people with high wages and safety standards.

if they take the money they were using to prop up the car industry and invest it in agriculture/aquaculture which we are competitive in the taxpayer could see a greater return on investment

No you can't beat Toyota if you want something reliable not showy. I've got a 1998 Corolla that passed it's MoT without me even putting any oil in or doing anything to it; and there are even older Corollas around here!

The efficiency of British production facilities outstrips all the European facilities as well. I think Australia is a little like the UK was 30 years ago Industrial relations wise. The Aussies have very aggressive Trade Unions and us and them mentality. The Nissan facility in Sunderland is a showcase.

Really? You don't think its because the Aussies have what they once called the English disease. In the 70s the unions struck every day in the car industry. I see a lot of similarities with those TU leaders and those of today in Aus. Mr Bee seems like he would make a very 70s TU man.

Someone said above the British car production facilities in Sunderland are world beaters they are and he salaries are very good actually. So we have a first world country competing with second and third world countries.

Just a thought.

No I don’t think so at all, those 3rd world manufacturers are now better than the Americans, Aussie wages are high so naturally someone willing work for literally a 30th of an Aussie wage is cheaper/more profitable to employ. No one has been striking here; the industry has been propped up for over 15 years by taxpayers. It is just not economic to make cars here.

Aussie should not really be in manufacturing we can't succeed in it because of the numbers, there are not enough of us and we are too far apart. BUT that is the very thing that makes us so good at agriculture. You can’t have everything. Aussie are learning to accept our role as Farm/Mine to China and see that were are better of working towards being innovators than manufacturers

And like I said they were getting more then minimum wage and many of the better employees were already headhunted but mining industry for even better wages.

@bee
We shouldn't be manufacturing for export except in a few speciality goods that we happen to be competitive in. The will always be a local manufacturing for made to measure products consumed locally.

We already depend on primary industries, they support the service industries and the others are making a loss.

If we took the handout we were giving to the car industry and use it to say develop preserved food plants to allow greater export capacity, and launch and aggressive advertising campaign in Asian for Roo Jerky?
It is a lot of money to keep car being bolted together here, As a lot of components were still imported. We could get a better return on investment in other industries.

The supply chian thing is China's problem, they are more dependant on the movement of goods between Australia and China then we are. And only the USA can really stand up to China.
