Black cab rapist John Worboys will be freed by the end of the month in a move that has provoked fury among victims' groups and led to calls for reform of the parole system.

John Worboys is feared to have attacked up to 200 women during a horrific spree of sex attacks he carried out on women he drugged in his cab.
Despite getting a sentence which could have seen him locked up for life, he has been freed just eight years in after a controversial parole panel decision he is no longer a danger to women.

The ruling has led to widespread claims of 'soft justice' and fears his victims, some of whom only found out about his release through radio news, are being let down by the system.

It emerged today that Worboys will be moved straight from a high-security jail into a bail hostel where he will be monitored by the end of the month.

 Worboys was jailed in 2009 for raping and sexually assaulting young women in his black cab.
Police suspect the 60-year-old, who was labelled a 'repetitive, predatory sexual offender' in a probation report, may have abused as many as 200 women.

Karen Ingala Smith, chief executive of women's sexual and domestic violence charity, Nia, said: 'The police believe that Worboys may have raped more than 100 women, others think this is a conservative estimate.
'He's served nine years and nine months, that's just over a month per rape victim. How can we say justice has been served?

I think he was convicted of 1 rape and less than 10 other sexual assault/drugging offences... and has been in prison for 9 years... that equates to about an 18 year sentence considering convicts normally only serve half their sentences...


I think that is quite a long time actually 'in prison', compared to what most of the so far convicted pakistani Muslim child rapists are getting...!

I dont understand why he was only convicted of one rape when police suspected he was a serial rapist and had been for many years.
They believe he had raped over 100 women and sexually assaulted nearer 200.
In any case he could have served life....so 8 years is an insult to all his victims.

Courts in this country seem to diminish the rape of women and children to a few measly years....thats if the cases ever get to court in the first place.

Worboys was found guilty last month of assaulting 12 women over 18-months But he has been linked to 85 other attacks and police say he could have sexually assaulted or raped more than 200 women.
Senior officers said they will interview Worboys in prison in an attempt to clear up dozens of unsolved sex crimes.

Many of his victims were young and had been drinking at bars and clubs in the capital when they hailed a black cab to get home in the early hours of the morning.

Police in Plumstead, south-east London, missed an opportunity to end his offending when they arrested him in July 2007 over an attack on a 19year-old student. It emerged during the trial that detectives did not act on the incriminating results of toxicology tests that found suspicious drugs in the victim's blood. They also failed to search his home in Rotherhithe, south-east London, or examine his vehicle to double-check his story.

Several officers face disciplinary action after an inquiry was launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Worboys spiked champagne with powerful prescription sedatives and over-the-counter sleeping pills. He tricked young professional women into drinking with him by claiming to have won the jackpot at a casino or on the lottery and showed them bundles of cash to prove it.

At the end of a seven-week trial last month, a jury convicted him of 19 separate offences, including one rape. Jailing Worboys, Mr Justice Penry-Davey, QC, said: "You developed and perfected a web of deceit that was sufficient to ensnare young, intelligent and sensible young women who had enjoyed a night out and whose only mistake, as it turned out, was to get in to your cab late at night.

The judge said a report on Worboys found the cabbie was a "repetitive predatory sexual offender" who had not accepted his crimes and had shown a "significant degree of sexual deviance". A further report suggested he posed a "significant risk of re-offending".

Worboys was a full-time stripper known as Terry the Minder between 1987 and 1999 and adored the attention lavished on him by women at hen nights and parties. When he gave up performing, Worboys, a licensed cab driver since 1996,  turned to a different method to get attention.

His first known attack was in October 2006 when he drugged a 26-year-old office worker. Worboys attacked a further six women until July 2007 when he was arrested for an alleged sexual assault.

The 19-year-old student revealed to police Worboys's modus operandi. The cabbie was questioned and bailed, but officers believed his story that the student was drunk and had kissed him. The case was eventually dropped.

Police and prosecutors have indicated they are prepared to bring fresh charges against John Worboys, the ‘black cab rapist’, amid a growing furore over why dozens of crimes were never brought to trial in the first place.

Police issued an appeal for information that could lead to a fresh investigation into Worboys, one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders.

Meanwhile, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said three rape and sex assault cases dating back to Worboys’ conviction but not presented at trial could now be used against him.

The CPS suggested the Metropolitan Police could re-submit the files dating back to 2009 when Worboys was jailed for a minimum of eight years.

Its also confusing how the parole board has decided he is fit for release, knowing that many more women claimed before, during and after his last trial that they had been drugged, assaulted and raped by him. Many of his victims were not notified of his release, some are rightfully afraid  now he will shortly be back on the streets again.

As the law stands a parole board cant make public the decisions they come to and why, hopefully in the future this will change.
It seems to me that some very bad decisions are made when deciding prisoners are fit to rejoin society.

I agree, that the answer is not to avoid cabs.

But she does make a point that I have encountered. In my younger day I have been incapacitated by alcohol, and it's not fun. Even a guy is vulnerable.

Most cab drivers are kewl, but we've had incidents. Either plan to stop at two, or go out with dependable friends, was my practice when I was drinking.

Victims of serial sex attacker John Worboys feel "betrayed" by the decision to release him, a solicitor has said.

The former black-cab driver, who was convicted of 19 offences and is suspected of attacking more than 100 women, has served ten years in jail.

Kim Harrison, who represented 11 women in civil cases against Worboys, said they were "absolutely terrified" by the prospect of his release.

The Parole Board chief has said he was "confident" Worboys would not reoffend.

Worboys, now 60, is due to be released from prison at the end of the month.

He was convicted in 2009 of 19 charges of drugging and sexually assaulting 12 passengers and one charge of rape.

I would say that not imbibing would be the better advice.  But that's prohibition.

The problem is that the first drink lowers inhibitions, and some people cannot stop after that.  So advice as to limiting drinks is problematic.

I think the best advice for everyone is to have situational awareness and not be alone if you can help it. Go and have a good time but try to be sensible. If you want to get totally off your face, do it in the safety of your house with trusted friends/Family.

The so called M25 rapist is the latest one to be considered for release Mags.

He received 7 life sentences....he has served less than 14 years, which means a life sentence in his case is TWO years.
His victims ranged from 10 years old.
