Compton is often associated with a crime filled past and rap music, but there's a side to this California town that not many people know about: horseback riding.


The Compton Junior Posse Youth Equestrian Program is a riding program for inner-city youth to help get them away from the lure of drugs and away from the culture of street crime through horses and riding.
The program has helped these "Compton Cowboys" build the strength of character to re-focus their lives in a positive way.

Brilliant idea. Horses are hard work and time consuming....but the thrill of riding them is a great release.
Its a great way of teaching people responsibility too.

Ive seen this advert, wasn't sure if its real. To work with horses must be a wonderful thing, they're such beautiful animals.

Similar "circuit breaker" programmes can be found operating in other parts of America, and in various parts of Canada and down here in Oz...

Some of them will use activities like horseriding, surfing, sailing, rock climbing, bushwalking/hiking and canoeing, to attempt to steer 'at risk' youth into better, more productive and less troublesome directions..

For more serious cases, such as kids already in trouble but where the relevent authorities see a good possibilty of turning them around, there are also a number of "tough love"/"boot camp" styled places, where they immerse some would-be hardcases into a 'self discliplined'/semi-regimented system in a remote location (e.g. a wilderness camp or a farm..) for 2, 3 or 4 weeks --  taking a more intense way to steer them 'back on course'.
