[*]Unruly children are increasingly likely to be progeny of ‘helicopter’ parents
[*]These parents pander to their every whim and are ruthlessly ambitious for them
[*]Child psychologist says their children tend to play up at school to get attention

Working with a group of primary school teachers recently, letting off steam during the first weeks of the summer holidays, I listened, appalled, as they reeled off their latest nightmare classroom dealings. But it wasn’t horror stories of pupils jumping on desks or hurling things around that shocked me most. Far worse was the attitude — and behaviour — of the parents. And not those at the less privileged end of the spectrum, either. No, the wild, unruly children are increasingly likely to be the progeny of so-called ‘helicopter’ parents — those who give intensive, one-on-one attention to their child and pander to their every whim, fuelling a ‘little emperor’ syndrome. They are ruthlessly ambitious for their child’s future — failing to realise how badly their mollycoddling is preparing them for the compromises of real life.

Razz

Nothing new there...

Helicopter_parenting, "cotton woolled" children, "cocooning", mollycoddling, absent parents spoiling kids excessively, and producing kids with overblown "sense of entitlement"..

I've seen that gradually increasing since the 1980s, down here.

Inevitably producing a larger proportion of people unprepared for the outside world, unable to cope with the unfairness and inequalities of life in general, and ever-increasing levels of depression as they find they can't live up those unrealistic expectations..        The middle class parents making their little darlings’ lives a misery – by never telling them... no! The only thing I disagree with, Wolf, is...it's been going on a lot longer than just the 80's. It's pretty much coterminous with post-WWII urban society.

Guilt is one reason parents pander to their kids every need....guilt because the parents cant be bothered spending time with their kids so they spend money and spoil them to over compensate for that.

On the other end of the spectrum some parents think its their responsibility to ensure their kids are never bored. Boredom can be good for kids...when they get fed up of it they will use their imaginations and entertain themselves.

A whole new generation of spoilt lil princes & princesses are being raised, in some quarters. The eventual fallout could be serious.

Imo the primary reasons why some kids are getting so spoilt:
1. There are fewer children being born, per family. More disposable income is available to lavish on them. But frankly they need the companionship of their parents more than they need material gifts.

2. Time is a high premium nowadays. Parents who very busy at work and cannot spend as much time as they should with their kids, compensate  by giving them excessive material gifts and overindulging their whims.

2. Via the internet kids can see how other people live. In the distant past if you were one of ...say, 8 kids in a poor family, you just got on with it and you knew no different. Now, via adverts on the internet & TV  kids can see - & crave - how the other half lives.
