For the first time ever scientists have shown how they can edit animal genes to shut down a HIV infection and then stop it from spreading further. The new study is the next step in the ongoing efforts to find a permanent cure for the disease, which saw 88,769 people in the UK require access to treatment in 2015, according to the National Aids Trust.

Great news indeed.  But by the same token, gene editing can equally be used to do widespread harm if it gets in the wrong hands. Biological warfare is SCARY!!! Like most scientific advances it's a double-edged sword.
