May calls a general.election 8th June..


Not entirely unexpected.

She will romp home,no party to rival her, she knows it.

Labour, kaput !

The weaker the opposition, the less the the party in power is held to account.
Unless Labour andor the LubDems getvtheir act together, this government will be able to to get away with murder.

We need a good opposition and Labour at the moment are not any sort of opposition!!

Theresa May sprung a massive surprise on the nation and her own ministers today by announced a snap general election for June 8 - after having a moment of clarity on a walking holiday in Wales.
In a dramatic statement on the steps of Downing Street, the Prime Minister fired the starting gun on a poll that she hopes will deliver her an unassailable majority to shape the country's future.
She blamed opposition parties who have been trying to frustrate Brexit for her sudden change of heart after months insisting she will not hold an election - singling out Nicola Sturgeon's efforts to exploit the situation to tear the UK apart.
The bold move took even members of the Cabinet by surprise, having been kept a closely guarded secret between a handful of close allies and aides. Brexit Secretary David Davis is thought to have been in on the plan, but it is not clear whether Boris Johnson was given advance notice before Mrs May gathered her top team this morning.

The odd thing is, whilst this is likely to be a poor result for Labour and may well be Corbyn's swansong, it could as easily be the start of a strong fightback by Labour and the LibDems.
A government without a strong opposition is as bad as a 1 party dictatorship.

She changed her mind as only a woman can. Called women's perogative

She really had no choice. Labour, Lib Dems, SNP, Tory rebels and the unelected House of Lords have all been threatening to derail the government's eventual negotiating stance to some degree, from either voting against it unless it conforms to their own position or even "...to bring the business of Parliament to a grinding halt."

Also, because she did not win her spurs as PM in a General Election she was in a similarly weakened position as Gordon Brown before her...and with a wafer thin majority. A win would confirm her legitimacy at a critical time in our history.

I really do not have a clue what the result will be on June 8th. I have never gone along with the pollsters' predictions and on two occasions, notably just 20 years ago when Kinnock was on the stage proclaiming the widely assumed Labour victory...only to be told that he had, er, lost mightily.

Nor do I yet know which way I personally will vote...until I know who the candidates will be and which will be best able to represent my very rural constituency and its particular problems.

Labour will be annihilated let's be honest. Regardless of what kind of leader you think Corbyn is (I like some of his ideas, but he comes across as a wet lettuice at times...), the media (Left and Right) have gone out of their way to bury him.

He will lose. The Tories will win a landslide.

My hope now is that at least the Liberals claw back a few of the seats the lost 2 years ago.

What were they supposed to do in that situation?

They would have rightly been laughed out of parliament, and may even have been even more mauled in 2015 than they actually were. They had a tough choice to make, and made the right one.

Now the alternatives (in my opinion) are useless incompetence with Labour. Hippies nonsense with the Greens. Ranting, hyper conservative fruitcases in UKIP, or the increasingly nasty Tories. The Liberals imo made a tough choice in 2015, and were going to lose in the end either way. Now they can start to rebuild, while Labour crumbles.

I'm with Les. I'm voting libdems as usual.

Well, Labour don't have 14 MP's presently on file with the CPS considering charges of electoral fraud..
It will be interesting to see Tory MPs campaining whilst on bail.

What I cannot get my head around are the morons, politicians, pundits and red top editors who want to eradicate Labour as a party.
We would be left with a 1 party state effectively.
A dictatorship, in rhe same vein as Turkey, Russia, China and even North Korea.
Every government needs a powerful and vocal opposition to hold them to account, to wish extinction of your opponents sets a very dangerous precedent from which there are only limited ways to fight it - insurgence ,  uprising and anarchy.
It is a scary prospect if May , Murdoch and Dacre get their way.
I suggest you watch the creepy and plausable film V for Vendetta , which is a tale of what can go wrong when there is only 1 ( far right) party, and that party is running the UK with a rod of iron.

As I recall, Labour's Morley, Chaytor, Devine and Ilsley would not have been able to have campaigned because they were in gaol for fraud and theft, and Moran would certainly have done time for similar offences had she not managed to convince the CPS that she was poorly.

When - and if - Tory MPs who are at the moment simply "on file" and "under consideration" regarding suspicion of electoral fraud are found guilty in a court of law and not by the Labour Party social media rumour mill,then they will fully deserve to be gaoled so far as I am concerned.

It would appear that unlike you, I am sufficiently old fashioned still to believe in the old legal principle that someone has a right to be regarded as innocent until found guilty by either magistrates or by a judge and jury.

Meanwhile, I know enough about world history to appreciate damn well what one party rule and governance by dictatorship can mean without watching a work of fiction, "creepy and plausible" or not. And the thought of May wanting to "eradicate" the Labour Party is risible...other than electorally, of course, an aspiration which is fully reciprocated by Labour.

A weak and ineffective Opposition is in no-one's interests, a point that I have made on countless occasions, and the fact that the once strong and effective Labour Party is now such a shadow (pun intended) of its former self is in my opinion down to the fact that it is now under the control under the extremist Momentum faction which, had it a shred of honesty to its name, now be campaigning as what it is in reality - Marxist.

Actually I may vote for the Green Party anyway. I need to look at the libdems policies for homosexuality - I'm sure I read something I didn't like the other day....can't find it now.

Did I also read that Theresa May won't take part in any pre-election debates??

She is adamant she wont take part in any pre election debates.
She has been very firm about keeping her brexit plans under wraps......could be she still has no idea what she is doing so wont be seen publicly to be cluless??

Its a wasted vote (the green one) but its better than not voting at all I think....at least you show willing and make it clear the main parties (or party) don't suit.

Good likeness for her....Corbyn doesn't have many of Alec Guinness's attributes though...apart from the beard.

Eds, a story was dug up on Tim Farron where he didn't directly say he thought homosexuality wasn't a sin. In parliament this week he was asked again and said outright he didn't think it was. The Liberals have been one of the most pro LGBT parties in recent years.

And yeah, May doesn't want TV debates.
