US election: Bernie Sanders wins Hawaii caucuses in race against Hillary Clinton for Democratic nomination

Bernie Sanders has won the Democratic caucuses in Hawaii, adding to US presidential nomination victories in Washington and Alaska declared on Saturday night. US media described the margin of victory in Hawaii, current president Barack Obama's home state, as emphatic. It means the Vermont senator has taken three wins out of three in the states holding votes for their nominations on Saturday, in a major psychological boost to his supporters as he seeks to keep up the pressure on rival Hillary Clinton.

But analysts said the victories had made only a small dent in the significant lead enjoyed by Ms Clinton in terms of numbers of delegates.

After Mr Sanders' two early wins in Washington and Alaska on Saturday, Ms Clinton held a delegate lead of 1,234 to 956, according to an Associated Press analysis, an advantage that expands to 1,703-985 once the superdelegates are included. It takes 2,383 delegates to win.

Looking good for Sanders, if (and its a big if) he can maintain this momemtum through to New York then the Democratic race is going to get very exciting indeed

I think he has it in the bag, many do not trust Clinton and who can blame them

I agree, but she still has over 200 more pledged delegates. NYC is huge, she takes it she wins imo- if he wins it, well she may have thrown it away again.

It is still hers to lose though, her lies were enough for a massive number in the southern state.

California is the big one. That primary is held on June 6th. Hillary is already so far ahead it really seems hopeless, but there is a window of opportunity for Bernie.

If Bernie takes Cal and NYC its his. Clinton benefits massively from the fact the primaries start off predominantly in the south, where she does better, and where Democrats don't stand a chance anyway.

Hillary is already 70% to the goal. Polls show she is very popular in Los Angeles, the second largest population center in the US.

Also, the Bay Area is her pocketbook...San Francisco and Silicon Valley (HP, Apple, Adobe, AMD, Cisco, Ebay, Google, Yahoo, etc.) finance her. Don't know what that means in terms of voters, but someone likes her.

That Bernie took Washington is impressive. Seattle is Boeing Aircraft and Microsoft. If he is attracting the young, savvy minds, that bodes well.

Remember, New York is Clinton country...she was Senator from New York. Akin to Bernie in New England. Tough row for him to hoe.

Bernie Sanders supporters are celebrating his victories Saturday in the Democratic caucuses in Washington state, Alaska and Hawaii. And Sanders did carry those caucuses by impressive margins. Sanders’s candidacy has had the beneficial effect of helping push Hillary Clinton to the left on issues such as huge and growing income inequality, regulating the financial industry and big corporations, and fair trade. However these latest results are unlikely to do him any good in his race against Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president.

The problem for Sanders is that he almost always does well in states (like the three he won Saturday) that hold caucuses and have small African-American populations. In other (usually bigger) states that hold primaries and have a larger percentage of minority voters, Clinton does well. So far that pattern hasn’t changed, and it’s unlikely to do so before the Democratic convention. Combine that with her support among unelected “super delegates” and the safe money is still on Clinton getting the nomination by a fairly comfortable margin.

In the category of “interesting but relatively meaningless,” Sanders also scored a big victory in the primary for American Democrats living in 170 countries outside the USA. (There are enough of them to have their own delegation to the Democratic convention in July.) You can see a breakdown of the results by countries with Democratic committees. Democrats living in the UK supported Sanders over Clinton by 2,874 to 1,726. Those living in Israel supported him by 249 to 160. Sanders also swept the United Arab Emirates (541 to 334) and Afghanistan (5 to 2). The only countries where Clinton beat Sanders are the Dominican Republic, Nigeria and Singapore.
