Momentum activists blamed for rise of anti-semitism at Oxford Labour Club, a senior source has claimed

It comes after a former co-chairman of the club claimed the infiltration of ‘hard leftists’ at the Oxford University Labour Club has led to a ‘vicious culture of personal attacks’, including the recent anti-semitic incidents:

Activists linked with the Jeremy Corbyn's hard leftist Momentum group are partly to blame for a rise in anti-semitism at Oxford, a senior source at the Oxford University Labour Club has alleged. “There is a parallel group of people who are not social democrats, who are not part of the mainstream tradition of the Labour party, who have infiltrated the club." It also follows the resignation of the co-chairman of the organisation, Alex Chalmers, earlier this week after accusing a large proportion of members of having “some kind of problems with Jews”. 

It is alleged the hard leftists are members with links to Momentum, the hard-Left group backed by Jeremy Corbyn, and are claimed to be advancing an “authoritarian and intolerant” Marxist tradition that “punishes dissent”.

David Cesar Haymann, former co-chair of the Labour club, wrote on his Facebook wall: “I arrived at OULC in 2013, when there was a welcoming atmosphere, with execs focused on hosting good speakers and campaigning to bring about a Labour government. Since 2015, and particularly after the election, there has been a concerted effort from the Oxford hard left to take over the club. “Many of these people have little connection to the Labour Party or its values, and have brought with them the worst of Marxist tactics, approaching OULC with a 'you're either with us or against us' attitude. The hard left has brought about a culture where vicious personal attacks are routine, and that has included revolting anti-Semitic incidents, such as the ones reported on by Jsoc."




He said “decent” Labour members must fight “this toxic culture, and restore OULC to being a proud representative of the flagship of the British left in Oxford”. A source at the club familiar with the current anti-semitic incidents also said: “There is a parallel group of people who are not social democrats, who are not part of the mainstream tradition of the Labour party, who have infiltrated the club.

The source referred to far-left groups like Revolutionary Socialism 21, and Momentum. The source alleged: “These people are associated with the hard left groups, they are Marxists and have taken over the club and promoted a vicious culture.
"They advance a Marxist tradition, which is quite authoritarian and intolerant of any dissent."
The comments follow revelations of anti-semitic activities at Oxford University.


“The Labour Party condemns anti-Semitism in any form."




The Oxford Jewish Society, which listed the new allegations, said it was “appalled at such shocking prejudice”.
Jo Johnson, the minister for universities, has demanded investigations in a letter to Louise Richardson, the university’s vice chancellor. “There can be no justification for attacks on Jewish students, and no tolerance for institutionalised racism” he wrote.

Oxford University has said it “does not tolerate any form of harassment or victimisation”.
A Labour Party spokesman said: “The Labour Party condemns anti-Semitism in any form. Following recent allegations of anti-Semitic behaviour and intimidation at Oxford University Labour Club, Labour Students have launched an immediate investigation and the Labour Party welcomes and supports this action. “If complaints are made about any individual member of the Labour Party, the party will take robust action to deal with any anti-Semitic behaviour.” A spokesman for Momentum said: "Momentum opposes racism, anti-Semitism, and all forms of oppression. Allegations that Momentum is involved in anti-Semitism at Oxford University or anywhere else are baseless and we have received no claims about any individuals or groups associated with Momentum."
