Gay and Bi teens have higher pregnacy rates

Study finds bisexual females five times more likely and gay males four times more likely than straight counterparts to experience teen pregnancy

GAY teens are more likely than their heterosexual peers to experience pregnancy in America, new data has revealed.

In Minnesota, bisexual females were found to be five times more likely than their heterosexual peers to have been pregnant and gay males were four times more likely than their straight counterparts to get someone pregnant, the Star Tribune reported.

But Professor Juliet Richters, from the University of New South Wales, said the issue is not as big of a problem in Australia.

“What’s happening in America is because of their health system and the highly polarised religious discourse means there’s a lot more pregnancy,” she said.

“They have more small towns — we are more urbanised.

“There’s also nobody in their schools prepared to say back off, don’t be rude - he’s just like the rest of you’.”

Teenwise Minnesota discovered the trend in teen pregnancies in the LGTBQI community after a statewide survey of high school student health, which asked students their sexual orientation.

The survey also found that LGTBQI teens were more sexually active with about 49 per cent of gay males reporting that they have had sex compared to 26 per cent of straight males, and 51 per cent of lesbian respondents saying they have had sex compared with 23.5 per cent of straight females.
