Trust Facebook with your Data? Mark thinks you're "Dumb Fucks" Empty Trust Facebook with your Data? Mark thinks you're "Dumb Fucks"

Post by veya_victaous Wed Mar 21, 2018 12:27 am

WHEN Mark Zuckerberg was a 19-year-old he had a conversation with a friend he must surely regret today.

Talking over an online instant messenger service on their Harvard campus, Zuckerberg expressed disbelief at the fact other students were handing over their personal information to be a part of the campus-wide social media site he had created.

Fourteen years later, his words are coming back to bite him. Here’s what he said.

Zuckerberg: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard ... Just ask.

Friend: What? How’d you manage that one?

Zuckerberg: People just submitted it.

Zuckerberg: I don’t know why.

Zuckerberg: They “trust me”

Zuckerberg: Dumb f**ks.

To be fair, he could’ve been joking or showing off to his mate and this was many years before Facebook turned into the social media juggernaut it is today with 2.2 billion users and an imperative to behave ethically.

But it also shows that perhaps the Facebook founder was always relatively unconcerned about the privacy rights of his users. At least from very early on he understood the power of owning their personal information.

The company has routinely come under fire for how it uses people’s data, and who it shares it with. But the latest scandal involving a shadowy company that pinched Facebook user data to help it design software to influence elections has given the company its biggest black eye yet.

Um...it's his business model.  The only difference is we're seeing foreign governments meddle in our political campaigns, instead of commercial marketing using the data derived from Facebook.

See, US politics...Hi-jacking of America, or Cambridge Analytical Uncovered.  Facebook is going to have to start guarding their member profiles (data) better.  But, they are in the business of selling those data, so how do they tell who is a good guy and who is a bad guy?

Incidentally, for anyone interested, Christopher Wylie, the Cambridge Analytica director of research--now whistleblower--is going to be interviewed tonight by Ari Melber on MSNBC at 6 pm EST.

Melber is a pretty good attorney, and conducts some excellent interviews. Might be some insightful stuff on this subject.

did you think it was free?
it's not, YOU'RE the product being sold.
and You can BUY it right now. you always could.
If I was releasing Apps for Phone, I would have purchased the data too as part of the 'advertising on facebook deal' they sell, 1000's of developers buy this package.

there is Literally Zero questions that his is being done.
Facebook collates consumer data and sells it.
what Facebook Customers (not the users of facebook) do with the data is up to them
Facebook has no technical control over the Data but does have some 'conditions' on use.
Of course those Conditions are not even legal in UK, EU or Australia so can be ignored.

no really, the backend systems to Collate the volume of Data are worth Billions.
the main 3 which have invested heavily enough to do this are Facebook, Google and Amazon.
Only Amazon don't 'bulk sell' data to 3rd parties, but they do use it themselves.
Microsoft have/are trying but as Bing has failed to achieve a decent market share they haven't really achieved it themselves.

'Can be' and 'Are being' are 2 different things.

while there is potential to track anything with an internet connection.
there are hardly the resources available to track all the known terrorists let alone everybody.
Facebook, Google and Amazon rely on you Submitting(posting) it yourself.

Smart TVs are a bit different, it is relying on a 'active listener' to determine speech and then will run a routine based on key words it picks up.
it's not being stored anywhere, at the moment at least. but the limitations are economic not technical. eventually we will get to the point where it is all recorded.

Newsday wrote:Here's how to turn off Facebook tracking on your devices
Questions were raised on the security of data Facebook collects on its users for advertisers.

If you’re worried about your information being shared, here’s how you can find out what Facebook knows about you, what it’s sharing with advertisers and how to stop Facebook from tracking you.

CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT

To find out what Facebook knows about you, log into Facebook and go to a page called “Your ad preferences.” You can find this page through this url, https://www.facebook.com/ads/preferences, or by clicking the small arrow on the top right of the blue bar. Click “settings” and then “ads.”

Depending on what pages you “like,” Facebook will show advertisements based on your interests in different categories including business, hobbies, news, entertainment, food and travel.

Facebook and Instagram both track your location, using location data to show ads from advertisers trying to reach people in or near a specific place.

Facebook gets this information from various sources, including: where you connect to the internet, through IP address on computers, tablets or phones; where you use your phone, through GPS and location services; and your location from your Facebook and Instagram profiles.

WHAT YOU DO ONLINE

The social media website also tracks what you do on the internet. Additionally, each time you use Facebook to log into apps on your phone, it tracks that information.

After Facebook collects information about what you do online, Facebook builds a profile about you, which you can see by clicking on “your information” and then “your categories.” Facebook shares this information with advertisers.

This information allows advertisers to target ads to people with similar interests, including people with the same birthday month, where you live and what type of technology a person uses.

You can tell Facebook to not share your information with some advertisers, but the only sure way to make sure it doesn’t track any activities is to stop using it. That includes other apps Facebook owns, including Instagram.

Users should remember Facebook is free because it makes its money by showing advertisements.

The Sun wrote:
Facebook can still track you after you delete your account – here’s how to stop it

Facebook's all-powerful ad-targeting network can follow you around the Internet even after you dump the social network – stop it in its tracks with this simple guide

ystem that follows you around the internet.

Even deleting your account may not be enough to stop it from snooping on you

The tool, known as Audience Network, uses bits of code – including tags, pixels, and cookies – to collect information on you to build a digital self – even if you don't have a Facebook profile.

It also allows thousands of third-party apps to feed off this data from its users.

The social network's boss Mark Zuckerberg has promised to curb access that third-party apps get to your data, but it's still unclear whether Facebook will be able to get back the data already shared.

And while Facebook took similar measures to shut out apps from access to its data-sharing tools in 2015, the Audience Network continues to thrive.

Facebook Data Breach – what happened?

Here's what you need to know...

A personality quiz app obtained data for 270,000 willing Facebook users

But it also sucked up info on all of their Facebook friends

That meant the app caught data for around 50-60 million users

This data was reportedly sold on to UK research firm Cambridge Analytica

Cambridge Analytica helps politicians and lobby groups create propaganda

The data was supposedly used to boost the Brexit campaign and get Trump into the White House
Facebook is said to have known about the data breach since 2015

The social network asked companies with the data to delete it, but didn't enforce the rule

The Guardian revealed the incident in an exposé thanks to Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie

There are now serious questions about whether Facebook has broken laws by giving up this data

Thankfully, you can check out our simple guide on how to stop Facebook apps handing over your data to bolster your Facebook security.

Facebook Audience Network
"The power of Facebook ads, off Facebook,” was how Facebook promoted the Audience Network upon its launch in 2014.

It sees the company show you ads targeted to your browsing tastes.

That way brands can serve you direct marketing messages based on your interests, even when you're not on Facebook via other sites and apps.

Google and Apple use similar ad targeting tools to ensure that the commercials you see online are relevant to you.

How to stop Facebook's ad-targeting network from tracking you online
On your smartphone or tablet

If you own an iPhone or iPad the process to block targeted ads is relatively straightforward.

Got to Settings on your device, tap Privacy and then scroll down to click on Advertising.

From there, toggle the Limit Ad Tracking Button to disable it.

If own an Android device, the process is very similar.

Open Settings, head to Accounts and Sync, select Google, then Ads and then finally select Opt Out of Interest Based Ads.

On your web browser

If you're using Chrome to browse the web, go to Settings in the right-hand dropdown menu.

Click on Show advanced settings, then select Privacy

Finally, click on 'Send a do not track request with your browsing traffic'.

This essentially tells individual websites to stop snooping on your activity.

But the problem is they don't have to honour the request. And Google can't force them to.

'Many websites will still collect and use your browsing data-- for example, to improve security, to provide content, services, ads, and recommendations on their websites, and to generate reporting statistics," writes Google.

On Facebook

Facebook lets you opt out of ad tracking on its site too.

Just go to Settings, then click on Ads in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

Under Ad Settings, click on the button that says 'Ads on apps and websites outside the Facebook Companies'.

Then scroll down to the bottom and select no on the dropdown menu.

Facebook says that even if you opt-out you'll still see ads, they just won't be relevant to your browsing interests.

Contact your local data privacy alliance

Facebook, Google and Twitter are just a few of the firms that are part of a number of privacy alliances that have agreed to honour requests to stop tracking.

In the UK, you can visit the website of the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance to find out how to add your details to their "do not track" schemes.
