Woodland
First topic message reminder :
well folks , after months of hunting, and many dissapointments
we have today sent notice of intent to purchase to the vendor of the woodland I recently mentioned, and instructed our solicitor to get on with things.
purchasing land is different to a house, and is an easier and quicker process generally, on average about 4 weeks
so........
piccies will follow when we get in , and I'll keep ypu piccied up as we clear paths, glades and do some coppicing.
the first year we have decide the thing to do is just clear the paths and some area we want as open glade....and then we will watch through the year to see what growing there and base future action on what we observe....
oh and got some grey squirrels (aka tree rats ) to

Just been given permission to pest control the entire piece of woodland for the time being
As each "lot" is sold I will stop keepering that bit, unless the new owner wishes me to continue...
target for next month....(hopefully) about 10,000 squirrels

ANNNNND
AT LAST...........WE HAVE THE KEY TO THE WOODLAND AND ITS NOW ours......
guess where we will be this weekend
first job...some "dead hedging" to enclose some 100sq meters (10 m per side ...about)
as a temporary "dog secure" area...whilst we get the fence round the entire perimeter installed.....

Re: Woodland
well we went to our wood last saturday
spent the day working on making the "dog pound"...got abot 1/3rd of it done, making 6 m of "dead hedge"
me collecting the "brash" to make the "dead hedge " with
part of the 6m of dead hedge completed
scuse the quality of the pics, taken on a crappy phone camera
will take my REAL camera next weekend
was a most pleasant day working on using the forestry skills I have.
the wood is in the national forest inventory and is considered an "ancient woodland of unknown status"
meaning its been damaged/harvested in the past and is currently "regenerating without supervison"
it NEEDS "managing" carefully to restore it and thus become "regenerated ancient woodland"
so out will go loads of the pole stage birch, and IN will come native broad leaf tree saplings, like oak, holly crab apple along the ride edges, and so on, along witha few "specimin" yew trees. A lot of thinning needs to be done to favour the mountain ash (rowan) and some nice willow and hazel that are growing naturally.

whew...was I glad to get that off and back to normal clothes......

Time for an update
warning ...long and picture heavy
well we decided that the parking turning area we has was totally inadequate ....sooo...a change is ordered...
I could barely get the van on it and it has a 15% slope....no good for a camper van
so the decision was made...
and an area at the back
And RHS was opened up
Then we invited the big boys in to play
and play
and they dog out the slope to reduce it and made the top area flat for parking the camper on.
then came the stone
all 70 odd tons of it ...thats 5 heaps like is shown.....
then it gets spread and bashed flat and tight
result one parking /turning area
view of slope into parking
view of entry way onto parking
this was all done on 2 days 20th 21st dec. last.......

Very impressive how that was all done in a couple of days.
Is that a load of sand a few inches down below the surface?

Re: Woodland
Then we needed to repair the cosmetic damage , and replace some of the trees we had taken out
since nov last year we have planted about 100 new trees, so I guess we are ahead of the game
so we decided on some landscaping
so a fortnight ago and last sunday
first a scots pine hedge to increase privacy and keep out the eyes of nosey neighbours
a view back along the soon to be hedge
there is a very wet area along part of the hedge line, so we planted this with Osier, a type of willo that loves wet soggy soil
the trees we planted in nov are doing well if these fellows are anything to judge by
the wood is a haven for ferns (not bracken)
mosses
and lichens
and finally the wood is waking up from its winter sleep
honeysuckle
and bramble
and foxglove
It wont be long untill we see bluebells breaking through.....
and sunday we finished just as the rain started...
so rain on the pond on a neighbouring plot.....

no its not sand ...its "sandy clay." quite grainy but very sticky...
we were lucky ....on the picture with the digger on the rhs, in the corner of the LHS the excavating revealed a "seep" of clean fresh water....so we have placed a verticle 4" pipe in there and will be installing a pump to take water to a 600 ltr IBC container ...so we NOW have fres drinking water on site...(naturally it WILL be filtered and processed to make it safe to drink)
the soil is VERY good and a rich growing medium....

The two...yep just two, guys who did it were real pro's....did a brilliant job, in very quick order, for a VERY good price....
they are local to the wood land, and came by way of recomendation via the farmer who's land surrounds the wood.

not yet...going to get a trail camera and leave it behind for a week..
we know there are fox, badger, rabbit, and we have otters from the river in the valley just below come to shelter in the wood. there is evidence of weasle, and stoat.
birds include robbins, corvids, blackbirds, grey wagtails, long tailled tits, goldcrests, wood peckers (type unknown...heard not seen) and buzzards and kites.
as to what we have planned
well we have a composting toilet so no need for nasty chemical toilet
we have fresh water
we have solar cells to use on the camper van
we have wood aplenty to use for cooking
the van will have fridge/cooker/sleeping and washing facilities....
we will be spending up to 4 days at atime up there as often as we can
tyhe wood has about half its areaunder (neglected) coppice this we intend to restore to its prober cut/grow cycle, to benefit wild life (and my craft wood and fuel wood store).... there will be pictures of that as we progress....

So you are going to be very much self sufficient then?
Have to say am envious and talk about getting away from everything.
To me that would be a great place to have the peace and tranquility to write a book.
Look forward to when you get some more pics up and hopefully some of the animals

It really IS tranquill....except when they start firing on the range at sennybridge...
but thats usually only one day, and not very often.....so I'll let em off.....
other wise all we hear is the river in the valley and the odd train on the line in the valley
and at night its dark....and oh boy do I mean dark.....dark like the inside of a black cow at midnight
cant see your hand in front of your face dark.....

It sounds idyllic, and in the summer it will be different again. I would have to have a candle lit at night though....I hate the complete darkness.
It's interesting to see the pics of the place you have described. x

Re: Woodland
Great photos, old chap, and some fine maintenance work too.
I must say that owning or just being responsible for an area of woodland is a deeply satisfying, and also humbling in a way, experience.
I have about ten acres of ancient woodland, the only remaining bit of my late wife's family estate, that I inherited on her death. It has a few conifers but mainly comprises oak, sweet chestnut, ash and sycamore...sadly all the many old elms fell victim to Dutch Elm disease.
She was buried there within view of her old family home through the trees, and in spring she's surrounded by a mass of bluebells. It was her last request, and it's where I'll be some day - not too soon, hopefully! Meanwhile, I regard myself simply as the current custodian.
I can't produce a picture show like yours (haven't a clue how to download 'em!) but there's a small glimpse in my avatar, taken when me and my old Landie were clearing brambles from the main ride.

Well Moley ...our bit of wales is only about 3 1/3rd acre but its got a lot in it, as said about half of it is hazel and birch coppice which has been neglected for a good while, so we plan to reinstate that for the benefit coppiciong brings, both to the wildlife and my wood store But tis true, we are merely "custodians" when we have such a valuable thing to look after, and it behoves us therefore to do our best by it...
I will post pics of the coppicing in progress, as it happens, along of course with anything else of interest.
We have hazel, birch some oaks, beech, spruce (too much spruce if the truth be known...some judicious thinning is indicated), and mountain ash, with various species of willow. there are also some very nice dog rose patches and a few brambles here and there...along with a wide variety of woodland herbaceous plants.
We have planted field maple, holly, osier, scots pine, yew and yellow broom (and some apples plum thornless blackberry and rhubarb, in the small "fruit patch")

Take your Observer's Book of British Fungi with you, or you could finish up in hospital. Or even sitting cross-legged on the ground singing songs about Goblins!
