Haunting images:
In an effort to preserve historic structures in Ethiopia, a pair of historians transformed a new piece of technology into an art form. Lidar technology uses pulses of light to create maps of 3D objects.

An image of an orphaned boy in Ethiopia, taken using lidar scanning technology. The boy remained still for most of the scan time, but the cleft on his left side was caused by movement during the scan.

Mr. Shovel Mouth:
In a discovery of seven new species of crocodylian reptiles near the Amazon, one of which had peg-like teeth. Experts believe this reptile used its shovel-like mouth and blunt teeth to scoop and sift through sediment and crush mollusks.

Gaping holes:
More strange craters were discovered in Siberia. Experts link the odd holes to a combination of thawing permafrost and escaping gases. More research is needed as the phenomenon may poses risks to people living in the area.

Rare kitty:
In less than 10 years, the Amur leopard population has doubled. The critically endangered cat has rebounded due to efforts of conservation in the area, namely the Land of the Leopards National Park.
