Three major U.S. airports have announced they will start screening all passengers arriving on flights from central China after a new mystery virus has taken the life of a second victim. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says they will start taking temperatures and asking about symptoms at New York City’s JFK Airport and the international airports in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The first screening took place Friday night at JFK, and the second will take place Saturday morning in San Francisco. The virus is thought to be a type of viral pneumonia that produces a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. It was first identified among people who had visited a food market in the suburbs of Wuhan, China, in December. “The earlier we detect a case, the better we can protect the public, and the more we can understand about this virus and its risk for spread,” CDC’s Dr. Martin Cetron said Friday, underlining that the direct risk for Americans is low.

Only for flights from Wuhán. What? Two flights a week?

But yeah, pretty bad illness. Like, the flu on steroids.

Human-to-Human Transmission Confirmed in Mysterious China Virus

The head of a Chinese government team of experts said Monday that human-to-human transmission has been confirmed in the outbreak of a mysterious new virus, which could cause it to spread more quickly and widely.

The announcement came after China reported 139 new cases of pneumonia and three deaths over the weekend caused by the coronavirus strain outbreak, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan last month. Two people in Guangdong province in southern China caught the disease from family members who had recently traveled to Wuhan, said Zhang Nanshan, a team leader and respiratory expert. Five people in Beijing have reportedly been diagnosed with the virus and a total of seven suspected cases have been detected in other parts of the country.

The CDC health inspections have been expanded to five airports now. In addition to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York...they have added Chicago and Atlanta.

Only one person is confirmed with coronavirus in the US. He lives in Seattle, and became symptomatic after a flight from China.
