Islamist terrorists carry out multiple attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka at least 150 dead 500 injured

Easter Day bomb blasts at three Sri Lankan churches and four hotels killed more than 150 people and wounded more than 500, following a lull in major attacks since the end of the civil war 10 years ago.

The explosions, some of which officials said were suicide bomb attacks, led to an immediate clampdown, with the government declaring a curfew and blocking access to most major social media and messaging sites.

What happened?

The powerful blasts - six in quick succession and then two more hours later - wrought devastation, including at the capital's well-known St Anthony's Shrine, a historic Catholic Church.

The three hotels hit in the initial attacks were the Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo and the Cinnamon Grand Colombo.




"A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo," the alert said.

The NTJ is a radical Muslim group in Sri Lanka that was linked last year to the vandalism of Buddhist statues.

So I'm thinking, which admittedly is often a precursor to me saying or typing something that will be found offensive or in poor taste, about the different reactions and level of anguish between recent events in New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Both events happened in houses of worship. Both claimed victims worshiping a "minority" religion for their respective counties. Most victims in both events were POCs. Sri Lanka is sitting at 4 times the death count.

The big difference is the "marketability" (I know that's a shitty word for this kind of tragedy, but the media sells stuff) of the bogeyman in these tragedies. When your selling advertising and clicks on a website, white, right wing nuts with a gun is far more "valuable" than brown, Islamo-nut with bombs, even if the latter is 4 times as deadly.

With Sri Lanka being part of the (former) 'British Commonwealth' it's not unexpected that other Commonwealth countries might pay more attention to this story, in comparison to the more insular and inward-gazing Americas (both North and South continents..).

And they play cricket in Sri Lanka --  another link to Oz, NZ, Britain, India, Pakistan, etc  --  maybe Texas should invite the Sri Lankan national team to be the first to play in those new stadiums when they open them..

Those churches bombed in Sri Lanka are mostly Catholic; as were the majority of victims..
There are significant Sri Lankan communities here in Oz.
