FORMER Prime Minister Bob Hawke was admitted to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital on Monday afternoon.
The 88-year-old’s condition was unknown but the Daily Telegraph reported that he was taken to the hospital on Monday afternoon, where he is undergoing treatment.
Mr Hawke’s wife Blanche d’Alpuget confirmed to the Daily Telegraph over the phone on Monday night that her husband was “OK”.
But when news.com.au recently visited the Hawke home with Sam Dastyari, Blanche said she was actually quite worried about her husband’s health.
“He’s not great,” she said. “When he leaves the house now he has to have his wheelchair. He often sleeps in until about 1. For him, to stand up is really painful.”
Labor sources told the ABC the former party leader was in hospital for tests and it was “nothing serious”.
Mr Hawke served as Australia’s 23rd Prime Minister from 1983-1991, leading the party to four consecutive electoral victories.
The creation of Medicare, the initiation of national superannuation and APEC were among his signature achievements while in office.
Mr Hawke is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most popular prime ministers.
