BRITISH comedian and political commentator John Oliver has made his thoughts on former Prime Minister Tony Abbott quite clear, comparing his time in the top office to “taking heroin”.
Speaking to Studio 10’s Angela Bishop live on the Emmys red carpet, Oliver didn’t hold back when he was asked if he wanted to thank Australia for providing him with so much comic material.
“Ding Dong Tony is dead,” he declared, adding: “I will thank Australia right now. I don’t know what the point of Tony Abbott was, but it was fun while it lasted. It was like taking heroin: it was incredibly exhilarating, and it was right that you stopped.”
But while Oliver may like to poke fun at our politicians, Bishop reminded him that Donald Trump was close to becoming a Republican candidate in the US.
“Yeh but I don’t think they’re going to elect him,” he said. “You did elect Tony Abbott.”
Oliver said he hoped Trump didn’t get elected, despite the comedic possibilities.
“I’m a human being as well, and I don’t really want to deal with the human consequences of that.”
